Social Media is categorized into two major parts,
1. Social Media Optimization, (SMO)
2. Social Media Marketing, (SMM)

Social Media Optimization (SMO):
As the name suggest, SMO is the unpaid promotion and marketing that is done for you, your brand, business, etc.

Social media Optimization helps your website, brand, products or services reach your customers & audience and gain more product, service or brand knowledge and awareness. This is one of the most used method or social media way to interact with customers or audience through your social media profiles and boost your business.

SMO is just not used by businesses, but also influencers, creators, NGOs, Governmental Organizations, young generation since being free of cost.

SMO doesn’t just means posting images and videos on social media platforms, but posting them in a right order, a strategical way through which the insights obtained are what you wanted to achieve.

Generally, platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat are the most commonly used for SMO activities.

Social Media Marketing (SMM):

On the other hand, as the name says, Marketing, SMM is the Paid version of SMO. Social Media Marketing, is also called Social Media Promotions or Social Media Advertising.

Social Media Promotions are done to reach and expand target audience, create wide engagement, boost their online activities such as post or video. The Paid promotional activities are created keeping some objectives and targets in mind. The objectives can be the goals that the individual or the company wants to achieve, brand awareness, lead generation, sale of product & services, creating engagement, spread of information, update on communal cause, etc.

Both, SMO and SMM are vital for individuals and companies, businesses as per their need and goals. The biggest difference is one is unpaid also known as Organic i.e., SMO and another is Paid also known as inorganic which is SMM.

As Social Media Managers, it’s our responsibility to guide all the basic difference and ways to gain better performance and suggest which Social Media technique will enhance your activities or your business.

Gaining performance, with advertising is not that difficult, the part where we as Social Media Managers and Analysist come into the picture are, how to gain most beneficial results whether being Paid Promotions or unpaid.
